Mindanao Floods

As of February 14, 2024 | 8AM

A total of 949,697 persons or 231,104 families were affected in Northern Mindanao, SOCCSKSARGEN, CARAGA and Davao Region by the effects of the shearline and the trough of a low pressure area (LPA).

Of the affected population, 26,777 persons or 6,962 families are staying inside 118 evacuation centers. State of calamity was declared in the whole province of Agusan del Sur, Panabo City and Tagum City in Davao del Norte and Mati City and Tarragona in Davao Oriental.

As the Philippine Red Cross mobilized its volunteers, who have helped through rescue operations, medical assistance, hot meals, and other interventions, we are appealing for your donations to effectively support the most vulnerable.

Together, let's save lives and help those in need.

A group of miner volunteers under RC 143 silently but quickly worked in helping the affected mining community. Applying the learnings and training they got from the Philippine Red Cross’ RC 143 that Chairman and CEO Dick Gordon formulated years ago and inculcated in every RC 143 volunteer ever since, the RC 143 miner-volunteers contribute significantly in the continuing rescue efforts, in collaboration with the Rescue Team of the PRC's Emergency Response Unit (ERU) from Davao de Oro, North Cotabato, Davao City (as shown in the photos) in Barangay Masara in Maco.

The group started training under RC 143 last year and is scheduled to hold another refresher training before the landslide occurred on Tuesday.

The miners shared that the rescue training they received, especially in situations such as landslides, helped them greatly. They stressed that if not for their training under RC143, they would not have been equipped to respond quickly and thoroughly during the disaster that silently but forcefully hit their community. They said that it is always best to acquire training and be part of the RC143, and urged companies and communities to tap the power of volunteerism in order to help save lives.

PRC Chairman and CEO Dick Gordon directed the dispatch of additional resources in Mindanao after seeing the need to provide immediate relief to about 230,000 families in Davao de Oro, Davao del Norte, Agusan del Sur, and Agusan del Norte affected by the flooding as a result of the shearline and the trough of Low Pressure Area (LPA) that PRC started monitoring since January 16; and the recent landslide.

In line with Chairman Gordon’s directive, two food trucks from Cebu arrived at the Nasipit Port in Butuan City at 645am yesterday.
“We sent additional food trucks because the situation is like a silent, creeping disaster. The affected people cannot cook in evacuation centers so we sent the food trucks to provide hot meals for them,” said Chairman Gordon.

The additional relief for Agusan and Davao provinces, placed in container vans and loaded in trucks, arrived at the Surigao del Norte port at 557am today.

He added that the PRC also has water tankers in the affected areas to enable the affected individuals and their families to have access to water for their personal hygiene.

“The welfare of the people is of utmost priority to us so we are working to continuously alleviate their suffering. We have prepared blankets, drinking water, food packs aside from Welfare and First Aid stations that we put up,” Chairman Gordon explained.

PRC Secretary-General Dr. Gwen Pang said the organization also provided body bags for the victims of the landslide in Barangay Masara, Davao de Oro last Tuesday.
